The Web has united geographically diverse populations that share similar interests a trend that continues to grow as access and equipment costs diminish. Looking beyond massť online media, PR practitioners have begun communicating directly with highly specialized audiences via niche online communities the blogosphere and beyond. However, to be successful, they must learn how to find even more specialized communities, accurately gauge the commitment needed to develop relationships and overcome fears of making mistakes in an environment where traditional media rules don't apply.

Mike McDougall, APR, is the worldwide director of products and services public relations for Eastman Kodak Company's digital and film imaging systems operation. He develops global communications strategies for all of Kodak's consumer and professional products and works with colleagues in Europe, Asia/Pacific and the Americas to manage regional implementation. Prior to joining Kodak, Mike was director of operations and public relations at Buck & Pulleyn, Inc.
